EPFO Launches Digital Life Certificate Campaign for Pensioners
TL;DR
- A nationwide campaign runs from November 1 to 30 to promote digital life certificates.
- Pensioners can verify their status using face authentication on smartphones.
- The initiative aims to assist elderly and unwell individuals by removing the need for office visits.
- The Centralised Pension Payment System now allows payments at any bank branch nationwide.
The Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) is participating in the fifth Nationwide Digital Life Certificate Campaign throughout November. This effort encourages pensioners to use digital tools, specifically face authentication, to verify their status from home.
By utilizing smartphones, eligible pensioners can complete the Jeevan Pramaan process without visiting government offices or banks. This technology is designed to support senior citizens and those with health conditions who find travel difficult.
The campaign, supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology and the Unique Identification Authority of India, covers approximately 2,000 cities and districts. Officials noted that the government aims to generate 2.30 crore digital certificates during this period.
Additionally, the EPFO has implemented a Centralised Pension Payment System as of January 1, 2025. This change allows retirees to receive their pension payments through any branch of any scheduled commercial bank, eliminating the requirement to transfer Pension Payment Orders when moving between locations.
Why It Matters
This initiative is significant for the large population of retired individuals who have relocated or live away from their original pension record locations. By digitizing verification and centralizing payment systems, the government is addressing mobility challenges for retirees, which is particularly relevant for those who move to different cities or regions during their retirement.
