INDIA Bloc Plans Mock Impeachment of Chief Election Commissioner

A political dispute has emerged between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and the opposition INDIA bloc concerning a symbolic public impeachment of the Chief Election Commissioner. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju responded to the opposition by questioning how Congress won only 44 seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections under election commissioners appointed during the UPA administration.

The opposition organized a mock impeachment proceeding at the residence of Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge. Former Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar presided over the event, and Rahul Gandhi was scheduled to give the closing remarks.

Opposition parties accuse the election body of harming democratic fairness and are demanding that Gyanesh Kumar resign from his post. Conversely, the BJP defended the Election Commission and described the mock proceedings as an insult to both Parliament and the Constitution.

The clash unfolds as the opposition prepares for a scheduled demonstration at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi, alongside ongoing legal discussions regarding the regulation of public protests.
