- The 28-year age gap between the two players was reported as a record for a WTA Tour match

- It was her first singles match since a first-round exit at the US Open
Venus Williams extended her winless streak in singles this year to 0-13 after a straight-sets loss to 18-year-old Lilli Tagger in the first round of the Guangzhou Open.
The Austrian teenager, ranked 53rd, defeated the 46-year-old Williams 6-2, 6-2. The 28-year age difference between the two players was reportedly the largest ever recorded in a WTA Tour match.
Tagger was born in 2008, the same year Williams captured her seventh and most recent Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.
The match was Williams' first singles appearance in two months, since her first-round exit at the US Open against Sofia Kenin. She has now lost 16 consecutive singles matches on tour dating back to July of last year.
Statistically, both players landed first serves at a similar rate, but Tagger won all the points on her first serve while Williams won only 60 percent of hers. Williams did not create any break-point opportunities, while Tagger converted four of her 16 chances.
In a separate match at the tournament, Kenin was eliminated in the round of 32, losing to Kaitlin Quevedo 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4.
Why It Matters
The match highlights the continuing struggles of one of tennis's most recognizable champions as she competes against players decades younger, marking a notable generational shift in women's professional tennis.
