TL;DR
- Four suspects arrested, including alleged mastermind Amit Kapoor
- Five women telecallers detained for their role
- Police seized phones, banking records and Rs 45,170 in cash
- Fraud involved fake promises of loans, scholarships and other benefits
- Victims were primarily in Tamil Nadu and other southern states
Delhi Police uncovered an organised cyber fraud network that lured victims, especially in Tamil Nadu and other southern states, with promises of loans, scholarships and other financial benefits.
Investigators traced the scheme through the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal and a state portal, leading to the arrest of four men, including Amit Kapoor, Shiva Singh Chaudhary and S Gaurav, and the detention of five women telecallers.
A raid on a premises in Budhella, Vikaspuri, yielded 21 mobile devices, banking documents, notepads, registers and Rs 45,170 in cash, along with evidence of coordinated calls to potential victims.
Police said the network used bank accounts and SIM cards to receive funds, then withdrew the money via ATMs and distributed it among members, taking commissions for arranging the accounts and facilitating transfers.
The case was registered as a first information report in West Delhi, and the investigation continues to identify further participants and recover losses.
Why It Matters
The bust highlights the growing threat of cross‑regional cyber scams that exploit Indians seeking financial assistance, a concern for diaspora communities in the US and Canada who may be targeted similarly. It also underscores the need for coordinated law‑enforcement efforts between Indian agencies and overseas authorities to protect citizens from online fraud.
