- Priority access is granted to government departments, parks, and landscaping projects.
- Special officers will monitor water quality and distribution.
The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board is introducing a new service to distribute treated water for non-potable purposes. Starting November 1, the program will utilize 21 green tankers to transport water processed at 11 sewage treatment plants.
According to Managing Director Ashok Reddy, the service will primarily support government facilities, public parks, and landscaping projects. Industrial sites and construction operations are also eligible to receive the water supply.
To ensure safety, the tankers will be painted green and clearly labeled to indicate the water is not suitable for drinking. The board has appointed special officers to oversee water quality, filling station operations, and the overall distribution process.
Why It Matters
This initiative highlights urban water management strategies in India as cities face potential resource shortages due to climate-related factors like El Nino. The model of repurposing treated wastewater for industrial and landscaping needs serves as a case study for sustainable urban planning in rapidly growing metropolitan areas.
