Bharatiya Janata Party MP Sudhanshu Trivedi has criticized the Congress party for organizing a mock Parliament, accusing the opposition of trying to cause national instability. He argued that the event was an attempt to distract from the country's economic progress under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Trivedi highlighted a 2025 World Bank report which indicates that extreme poverty in India dropped significantly between 2011 and 2023. According to the findings, the percentage of people living below the poverty line has decreased from over 27 percent to just 2.6 percent.
The MP also shared data regarding daily earnings, noting that the number of people making less than 400 rupees a day has fallen from 57 percent to 16 percent over the last 14 years. He stated that these figures reflect a successful effort to improve living standards across the nation.
Referencing the Gini Index, Trivedi claimed India is now among the most economically equal nations in the world. He noted that India's score of 22.5 ranks it fourth globally and represents the lowest level of inequality among G7 and G20 member countries.
These remarks were made as leaders of the INDIA bloc prepared for a public impeachment program against the Chief Election Commissioner. The opposition event was held at the residence of Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge after being delayed by rain.
Why It Matters
The debate over poverty reduction and economic equality is a central point of contention between India's ruling and opposition parties, influencing the country's political narrative and its standing among global economic powers like the G7 and G20.
