Pune-based designer Karishma Shahani Khan is hosting a public showcase titled TARA at 47-A in Mumbai’s Khotachiwadi. The exhibition, which runs until November 8, explores the philosophy of sustainable fashion through her labels, Ka-Sha and Heart to Haat.
The showcase aims to reveal the often-hidden steps of garment production, including cutting and embroidery. Visitors are invited to interact with the clothing, watch studio documentaries, and engage in hands-on maker spaces to better understand the labor involved in fashion.
The two labels operate as a connected system where the production waste from Ka-Sha serves as the raw material for Heart to Haat. Products from the latter are created entirely from existing materials, including fabric flowers, home textiles, and footwear.
Karishma draws inspiration from Indian textile traditions, such as the patchwork techniques found in godri quilts. She hopes that by highlighting the maker and the hours spent on each piece, consumers will develop a more meaningful relationship with their clothing.
Why It Matters
This exhibition highlights the global shift toward circular fashion economies, demonstrating how traditional Indian textile crafts can be integrated with modern upcycling practices. By making the labor-intensive production process transparent, the showcase encourages a more thoughtful approach to consumption that resonates with conscious consumers in India and abroad.
