Kylian Mbappé is facing significant backlash in China after a video clip circulated showing him describing a meme of his face superimposed on Mao Zedong, referring to the former Chinese leader as a dictator. The remarks, made during a French television program called The Bridge, quickly spread on Chinese social media.
In response, several Chinese companies cut ties with the Real Madrid striker. Dongpeng Beverage, dairy company Mengniu, and cheese maker Milkground all announced the termination of their sponsorship deals with him, according to company statements. Dongpeng's sports drink brand had only named Mbappé as its ambassador earlier this year.
Other brands, including On and Dior, reportedly removed Chinese promotional material featuring Mbappé, though neither confirmed a full global termination of their partnerships. Mbappé's accounts on Chinese platforms Xiaohongshu and Weibo were also muted, and reports indicated disruptions to broadcasts of Spanish football matches, though these could not be independently confirmed.
Mbappé issued an apology in Chinese, French and English on social media, acknowledging that his remarks were poorly judged and had hurt Chinese communities worldwide. La Liga also released a statement expressing regret over the impact of his comments on Chinese fans, clarifying that his views did not reflect the league's official position.
Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said Mbappé's apology would ultimately be measured against his future conduct, urging him, Real Madrid and La Liga to take the matter seriously. State media outlet People's Daily, through its commentary platform, argued that public figures who offend a country's history and culture while profiting from its market would not be tolerated.
China's Foreign Ministry also commented on the controversy, with a spokesperson saying that words or actions seen as hurting the feelings of the Chinese people would face unified pushback across Chinese society.
