Satt Baayu, a group of seven women artisans from Kutch, Gujarat, is hosting their debut exhibition, Ek Pehel, in Hyderabad. The event takes place from October 15 to 17 at Saptaparni in Banjara Hills.
The collective, which formed seven months ago, includes artisans specializing in Mashru and Kutchi weaving, as well as Suf and Rabari embroidery. The display features a range of items including saris, stoles, jackets, kaftans, and beaded jewelry.
The artisans are graduates of a design course at Somaiya Kala Vidya and are currently participating in a business management program. Their goal is to balance the preservation of traditional craft techniques with modern design innovations, such as experimenting with new color palettes and materials like mulberry silk.
Beyond their own work, the exhibition includes pieces from three other artisan groups from Karnataka, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. Visitors have the opportunity to meet the makers directly and learn about the evolution of their craft practices.
Why It Matters
This event highlights the growing role of Indian women artisans in entrepreneurship and business management. By taking charge of their own design, marketing, and pricing, these women are demonstrating how traditional heritage crafts can be sustained and evolved through independent business models.
