French student mobilizes on X to expose viral AI‑generated misinformation
TL;DR
- Student creates X account to debunk AI‑generated images
- Fake image of poor children garners ~1 million likes
- Account grows to 133,000+ followers
- Campaign leads to YouTube removing harmful AI cartoons
A Paris‑based 20‑year‑old student, Théodore Cazals, launched an X account called “Insane AI Slop” after encountering a viral AI‑generated image of two emaciated children that received nearly one million likes on Facebook. He began posting mock‑explanations of similar misleading images and videos, quickly attracting over 133,000 followers.
Followers sent him additional examples, revealing recurring motifs such as depictions of poor children, religious themes, and military subjects. Cazals described these creations as “AI slop”—quickly produced, low‑quality content designed for rapid views.
Using his growing platform, Cazals alerted YouTube moderators to disturbing AI‑generated cartoons, including bizarre narratives involving parasites and religious imagery. YouTube subsequently removed the flagged channels for violating community guidelines.
The backlash against such AI content has also surfaced in comment sections on TikTok, Threads, Instagram and X, where criticism sometimes outperforms the original posts in likes.
Why It Matters
The spread of low‑quality AI‑generated visuals can mislead audiences across platforms used by Indian diaspora in the US, Canada and India. By highlighting deceptive content, the initiative shows how online communities can curb misinformation that might otherwise shape perceptions about vulnerable groups or influence cultural narratives.
