Amritha Ram and KH House of Khadar Redefine Khadi for Global Fashion

Designer Amritha Ram, creative director of KH House of Khadar, is working to shift perceptions of khadi by presenting it as a versatile material for global fashion. Her approach treats the fabric as a blank canvas, moving beyond traditional associations to create modern, wearable designs.

The brand’s latest collection, titled Sutura, was recently recognized at the Runway Seven Fashion Awards in New York, where it received the prize for Best Ready-to-Wear Collection. The showcase featured a film highlighting the work of weavers, emphasizing the craftsmanship behind the pieces.

The collection incorporates various textures, including undyed natural khadi, khadi denim, and vegetable leather. By experimenting with sustainable fabric blends, the label aims to expand the structural possibilities of the textile while maintaining its commitment to sustainability.

Beyond her runway work, Ram is actively involved in film costume design. She is currently working on projects for Raaj Kamal Films International, including the upcoming film Kalki 2, noting that she finds a balance between the collaborative nature of film work and the creative freedom of fashion design.
