Poona Merchants Chamber Prepares Diwali Treats Amid Drought
TL;DR
- Workers are preparing thousands of kilograms of laddoos and chivda to sell at rates lower than retail prices.
- Severe drought conditions in Maharashtra have left multiple villages unable to prepare festival food.
- The organization plans to send 5,000 kg each of laddoos and chivda to affected areas like Dhule and Solapur.
- Rising costs of ingredients and LPG have led to a slight price increase for the festive items this year.
The Poona Merchants Chamber has begun preparing large quantities of traditional Diwali snacks, including chivda and laddoos, to be sold at affordable rates below retail market prices. These packages cater to both low-income families and wealthier households looking for trusted ingredients.
This year, the festive food preparation faces significant hurdles due to severe drought in parts of Maharashtra, prompting calls from villages unable to celebrate. In response, organizers plan to distribute thousands of kilograms of the treats to heavily impacted regions such as Dhule and Solapur.
Rising commodity and fuel costs have forced a slight price adjustment for the items compared to previous years. Ingredients like peanuts, oil, sugar, and LPG cylinders have all seen notable price hikes.
To ensure safety, approximately 1,000 workers are participating in strict medical checks in coordination with the Food and Drug Administration. The prepared goods will be sold across 15 centers in Pune starting November 1 and will also be available for international shipping.
Why It Matters
This event highlights community efforts in Maharashtra to support underprivileged families and drought-affected villages during the festive season, while also demonstrating the broader impact of rising food prices and adverse weather conditions on local traditions.
