ISRO launches NVS-03, restoring NavIC to minimum operational level
TL;DR
- ISRO lifted off GSLV‑F18 with 2,250 kg NVS‑03 satellite
- Satellite placed in elliptical orbit of 170.3 km × 38,080 km
- NavIC now has four operational satellites, its minimum configuration
- NVS‑03 carries an indigenous atomic clock and new L1 civilian signal
- Launch campaign completed in record 47 days
The Indian Space Research Organisation successfully launched the GSLV‑F18 carrying the 2,250 kg NVS‑03 navigation satellite from Sriharikota on Friday night. The vehicle lifted off at 11.51 pm and inserted the satellite into an elliptical orbit of 170.3 km by 38,080 km after a flight of about 18 minutes and 40 seconds.
According to ISRO officials, the precise injection meets mission requirements and restores the NavIC constellation to its minimum operational configuration of four satellites. NavIC provides positioning, navigation and timing services over India and up to 1,500 km beyond its borders.
NVS‑03, the third satellite in the second‑generation NVS series, carries an indigenous atomic clock and adds an L1 civilian navigation signal to the existing L5 and S‑band signals, improving utility for civilian and commercial users and enabling interoperability with other global navigation systems.
Why It Matters
Restoring NavIC to its minimum operational constellation enhances India’s independent positioning, navigation and timing capabilities, which are vital for transport, shipping, disaster management and other services used by Indian communities in the United States, Canada and India. A reliable NavIC system also supports commercial applications and can complement global navigation networks, affecting cross‑border logistics and technology collaborations.
