Arunachal Pradesh Releases Four Protesters Opposing Proposed Siang Dam
TL;DR
- Four individuals detained under local unlawful activities laws were freed from Jully Central Jail after nearly a month.
- The state government approved the release as a goodwill gesture following demands by the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum.
- Officials reinstated suspended traditional village leaders linked to the agitation against the 11,200-MW project.
- Chief Minister Pema Khandu has invited protest leaders to resume dialogue to resolve safety and environmental concerns.
Four protesters detained in connection with demonstrations against the proposed 11,200-MW Siang Upper Multipurpose Project were freed from Jully Central Jail near Itanagar on Saturday. The individuals, identified as Adum Tayom, Omak Paron, Okut Paloh, and Oson Paron, had been held since October 9 under the state's Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
Their release followed a decision by the Arunachal Pradesh government intended as a goodwill gesture to address conditions set by the Siang Indigenous Farmers' Forum. The Chief Minister's Office also approved reinstating traditional village heads who had been suspended due to disciplinary actions associated with the demonstrations.
Local indigenous groups have raised concerns that the mega dam could cause environmental damage, flood ancestral villages, and displace residents. While protests escalated through September and October into violent encounters and security deployments, state leadership clarified that only a pre-feasibility study is currently under consideration, with no construction approved by central or state authorities.
The government has requested the forum to set a date to meet with Chief Minister Pema Khandu. Decisions regarding the removal of armed police forces and the withdrawal of police cases remain subject to future discussions and standard legal procedures.
Why It Matters
The release of the protesters and the invitation for dialogue signal an effort to de-escalate heightened civil unrest and security deployments in Arunachal Pradesh. It highlights the ongoing political and environmental friction between mega-infrastructure projects and indigenous communities concerned about land displacement and environmental degradation in India's northeast.
