North Korea Denies Involvement in Massive Binance Crypto Hack
TL;DR
- Pyongyang dismissed U.S. claims connecting it to the multi-billion dollar Binance breach.
- Blockchain investigators traced billions in stolen assets moving through numerous wallets and blockchains.
- Binance has begun restoring withdrawals and covered most of the affected funds.
North Korea has strongly condemned accusations from Washington tying Pyongyang to a massive cryptocurrency theft from Binance, labeling the claims a severe political provocation through state media.
Kim Yo Jong, sister of the North Korean leader, criticized the FBI for attributing the security breach to a hacking collective tied to the country, claiming the U.S. aims to paint the nation as a cyber criminal state.
Meanwhile, blockchain investigation firms including Elliptic and Chainalysis reported that perpetrators moved billions across thousands of wallets and multiple blockchains using advanced laundering tactics.
Investigators noted that while a substantial portion of the stolen funds has been frozen or seized, billions remain in addresses connected to the incident.
In response to the breach, Binance stated it is gradually reopening asset withdrawals and has successfully covered roughly 95 percent of the impacted amount.
Why It Matters
Cryptocurrency security and state-sponsored cyber threats impact global digital asset markets and international financial security, concerns that resonate with investors and regulators in North America and around the world.
