Delhi ACP Suspended Following Police Protest Over Transfers
TL;DR
- The Ministry of Home Affairs suspended ACP Manasvi Vashistha on November 2.
- The move followed a rare protest by over 100 police personnel against his transfer.
- The dispute stems from a confrontation between lawyers and police at Shahdara station.
- Vashistha is an IIT Kharagpur graduate and former security officer for the Vice-President.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Manasvi Vashistha was placed under immediate suspension by the Ministry of Home Affairs pending a departmental inquiry. The order requires Vashistha to remain in Delhi and seek permission before leaving the city.
The suspension occurred shortly after more than 100 police officers gathered at the Police Headquarters to demonstrate against the transfer of Vashistha and an inspector. The personnel were protesting the administrative fallout of a conflict with lawyers at the Shahdara police station regarding a parking dispute and subsequent arrests.
The conflict began in late October when an advocate was injured during a scuffle with police. While bar associations claimed the officers failed to arrest the accused individuals as promised, police personnel have demanded action against lawyers they accuse of hooliganism.
Vashistha, an IIT Kharagpur alumnus and former Sashastra Seema Bal officer, previously served as the personal security officer for former Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar. He stated that the suspension has not shaken his confidence and expressed his belief that the system will conduct a fair investigation.
Why It Matters
The incident highlights significant internal friction within India's capital police force and the complex relationship between law enforcement and the legal community. It also underscores the high-stakes nature of administrative accountability for senior officers with distinguished backgrounds in national security.
